Vikings win 3-1 vs. East Jordan in league series on Tuesday

The varsity girls volleyball squad from Grayling High School won games one, three, and four to defeat the East Jordan Red Devils 3-1 on Tuesday during a Lake Michigan Conference series hosted by the Vikings.
Grayling won game one by three points. It was close all the way through.
With the score tied at 21-21 late in the contest, Grayling won four of the next five volleys to win 25-22.
Highlights for Grayling in game one included two kills by Allie Moffit and an ace by Zora Binert.
East Jordan won 25-12 in game two, tying the series at 1-1.
Nicole Oppermann, Esa Powers, Kaylynn Childers, and Madison Longendyke had kills for the Vikings.
Grayling responded with a 25-15 victory in game three of the series.
It was close for a while. The contest was tied at 10-10 after the first 20 volleys. Grayling scored on aces by Mallory Hatfield and Ellie Wagner early in the match.
After that, the Vikings outscored East Jordan 15-5. Grayling’s points included a block by Longendyke, a kill by Longendyke, three kills by Moffit, an ace by Hatfield, and an ace by Wagner.
Game four was also tied at 10-10 after the first 20 points. Grayling scored on a kill by Longendyke, a kill by Moffit, an ace by Binert, an ace by Gracie Lochinski, and a kill by Powers.
The Vikings outscored the Red Devils 10-5 for the next 15 volleys, giving Grayling a 20-15 lead late in the game. Lochinski served two aces and Wagner had one ace.
Later, with the Vikings leading by five, 24-19, Moffit hit through a block for a kill, ending the game. Grayling won 25-19, clinching a 3-1 series win for the Vikings.
“Good win,” Coach Tim Zigila said. “I think the girls passed real well, which is something that’s really been a focus area in practice, improving passing and communication.”
“Everybody’s been contributing, everyone taking advantage of that opportunity,” Coach Zigila said.
The Vikings will play in the Kalkaska Invitational on Saturday, Sept. 30.
