New athletic director for Grayling to start in July

The Crawford AuSable School District has a new athletic director. Nate Maury, originally from Lake City, was hired in May and he will officially take over the role on July 1.
Prior to being hired as Grayling’s athletic director, Maury served as AD for Byron Area Schools for two years.
“I learned a tremendous amount there,” Maury said.
Before that, he was an athletic intern at Byron Center High School.
“It was there I really learned most of my skills as an athletic director,” Maury said.
Maury went to college at Grand Valley State University, earning a degree in sports management with a minor in business. An internship at the university helped lead him toward his current career.
“That kind of gave me my first taste of doing things similar to an athletic director,” Maury said.
Byron Area Schools are located in Shiawassee County, south of Saginaw and east of Lansing. Byron Center High School is located south of Grand Rapids.
Maury is married and has a 16-month-old son; his wife is also from Lake City, and Maury wanted to move up north to be closer to relatives in his hometown.
“When the Grayling (athletic director) job came open it was a no-brainer for me to apply for it,” Maury said.
Maury described Crawford County as “just a great area to be in.”
“We’re big outdoor people. What better place to be?” he said. “Having a son, it was a no-brainer fit. They’re big into family here.”
He said the school was also a great fit.
“Not only is the athletics strong here, academics is strong,” Maury said.
He didn’t think he would be able to get an athletic director job this close to his hometown this early in his career.
“We just bought a house in Grayling. We look forward to being here for many years,” Maury said. “Dream job for me. Great area to be in. Great area to raise a family.”
Maury has been in contact with current Grayling High School Athletic Director Sparky Nitchman in an effort to make the change go well.
“(Nitchman) has been trying to catch me up to speed as quick as he can,” Maury said. “It’s been an easy, smooth transition for me.”
Maury played four sports in high school at Lake City – football, baseball, golf, and basketball – and he played club sports at Grand Valley. He coached varsity baseball at Byron Area and is open to coaching sports in Grayling.
“I do plan on coaching a sport if possible,” Maury said, most likely baseball or golf.
“Looking forward to getting things going,” Maury said.
