From the Desk of the Main Street Program Director

Fundraisers and promotions coming up
by Rae Gosling, Grayling Main Street Program Director
Greetings Main Streeters! I am absolutely delighted to share some projects that are being developed in the Grayling Main Street (GMSt) office.
As you may recall, a few weeks back I introduced our new AmeriCorps VISTA member (Volunteer In Service To America), Ms. Erica Blair. Ms. Blair is charged with developing fundraising strategies and opportunities and a better communication plan for our financial contributors, as well as helping with business in-fill for Downtown Grayling.  Many of these tasks will be performed simultaneously, but Ms. Blair has chosen to lead with some quick fundraising projects that build on what we are already doing.
Last week we received our second order of Grayling socks. After the incredible success of our first round, we are pleased to be continuing the partnership with Great Lakes Shark Sock Co. to offer ankle socks with the Grayling destination logo on them.  We were able to raise $1,320 for GMSt programming, with the first 220 pairs. In this round, the socks are $8 per pair, and will net the program $480. Additionally, we have more local businesses that will be offering the socks. Keep an eye out for a list of purchase location in the coming week.
Building on the success we have had with the sock sales, Ms. Blair is working on a new line of Grayling merchandise. Just like the socks, profits will be used for GMSt program costs. Right now, she is looking into items that are not size dependent. With the holiday season fast approaching, our target is to have the first items available at Christmas Walk. This is an ambitious target and Ms. Blair is whole-heartedly committed to completing the task. Is there a particular product you would like to see available? Erica would love to hear your feedback. You can reach her via email, at
In other exciting news, GMSt is looking forward to continuing the #DowntownDateNight promotion. The recent give-away, courtesy of the Rialto Theater and the Wednesday Gentlemen’s Club, was well received and left people asking for more. We are pleased to announce our next #DowntownDateNight location has been decided and steps are being taken to pull the pieces together. If you, your club, or your business are interested in sponsoring a #DowntownDateNight please give me a call or send me an email.
Finally, I am expanding our resource pool and looking to build stronger relationships with our neighbors and regional support options. Over the past few weeks, I have had the pleasure of meeting the staff from, and becoming more familiar with, the Roscommon-based Sawmill Rural Business Center. Their mission includes serving all of northern Michigan, and we are eagerly looking into partnership opportunities to serve Grayling entrepreneurs and existing businesses.  This new resource, who has a strong established relationship with Michigan Small Business Development Centers (SBDC) is a verified ally for entrepreneurs.   We hope to develop programming to support our Grayling small businesses, and those looking to build a business, with their help.
