Close to 100 people compete in 2018 Cote Dame Marie Ski Loppet despite change of venue, cancellation of some race divisions

Due to poor trail conditions at Hanson Hills Recreation Area, Grayling Recreation Authority (GRA) had to make changes to this year’s Cote Dame Marie Ski Loppet – an annual series of cross country ski races for people of all ages and skill levels – including the cancellation of some races and a change of venue for others.
Justin Andre, Director of Operations for GRA, said recent weather conditions, including rain and lack of snow, left the cross country trail system at Hanson Hills unsuitable for the 2018 Cote Dame Marie Ski Loppet.
Andre said parts of the course were “unsafe” and some parts had no snow at all.
“Our trail system is shot,” Andre said.
GRA hoped to get enough snow early last week in order to proceed with the Cote Dame as planned, but the amount forecasted did not materialize.
“We were hoping to pull a miracle off but it didn’t work,” Andre said.
Instead, GRA was able to make some last minute arrangements and change the venue for the race series. Forbush Corner, a cross country skiing destination in Frederic, offered to host the race with GRA. The 2018 Cote Dame was held on Saturday.
Andre said the trails at Forbush were in good shape for the races despite being only six miles from Hanson Hills. Forbush Corner personnel groomed the trails for the Cote Dame during the morning of the race, Andre said.
“Quite a bit more snow up here,” Andre said. “They put together a great loop.”
Event organizers kept the Michigan Cup men’s and women’s races for this year’s Cote Dame and cancelled the citizen races. Organizers had planned to cancel the Junior Division race, but had quite a few competitors planning to come, so they conducted it prior to the two Michigan Cup races.
Andre said GRA was pleased with the turnout; close to 100 people competed in the 2018 Cote Dame Marie Ski Loppet despite the change in venue, losing the citizen races, and losing several skiers to the World Masters cross country race in Minnesota, Andre said.
“I figured we’d get anywhere between 60 and 80,” Andre said. “Great, great attendance, considering.”
Andre said the skiers just wanted to compete, since the season is “so short,” with only a few weeks available depending on snow conditions.
“All in all, the skiers are happy,” Andre said.
The Michigan Cup men completed three laps and the women completed two laps on the course. Winners of the two races, plus results for the Junior Division, are available below.
