A few weeks remain to reserve meals for community Thanksgiving Dinner

Organizers for the Crawford AuSable Thanksgiving Dinner – an annual holiday event held on Thanksgiving Day – have a question for you: would you like to reserve one of the event’s many meals?
The annual event has grown throughout the years, and last year the Crawford AuSable Thanksgiving Dinner, according to organizers, served close to 1,000 meals, a new record. Most of those meals were delivered.
“Last year we delivered (more than 700) meals to people,” said Patrick Ertel, a member of the Thanksgiving Dinner planning committee.
During the recent planning process, volunteers realized that reservations for meals are well behind last year’s pace for this time of year, and they want to let people know that the meal delivery is available.
“We need to make sure that people that are in need of this meal don’t forget to ask for it,” Ertel said. “If we don’t get the word out, people may end up without dinner that night.”
Event organizers said a variety of reasons can create circumstances in which people may want to have a meal delivered on the Thanksgiving holiday. Illness. Loss of a family member. Financial issues. Personal mobility.
Crawford AuSable Thanksgiving Dinner organizers hope people will contact them to reserve meals due to the large amount of planning and coordination it takes to conduct the event. An army of volunteers cooks the food, prepares the dine-in area, serves meals at the event’s base at the Grayling Army Airfield, assembles the reserved meals and the take-out meals, and drives the delivery meals to the appropriate locations.
To reserve a meal, call Sally at 348-9418 before noon on Wednesday, Nov. 22.
If you prefer to dine-in during the event and need a ride to the Grayling Army Airfield, reserve free transportation from Dial-A-Ride by calling the Crawford County Transportation Authority at (989) 348-5409 no later than 5 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 21.
Volunteers are still needed for the event. If you would like to donate time to the 2017 Crawford AuSable Thanksgiving Dinner, contact Patty Crandall at (989) 745-3557.
Volunteers include kids, adults, senior citizens – people of all ages and backgrounds.
“I think what I love most is the cross section of people that come out to help,” Ertel said. “It’s just people coming out to help.”
“We are fortunate to live in a community that is so giving and caring,” organizers said.
