The varsity volleyball squad from Grayling High School ended its 2017 regular season with a three-team meet at Gaylord on Monday, falling to the Blue Devils and winning vs. Pellston.
The meet started with Grayling vs. Gaylord. The Blue Devils won 26-24 in the first game of the best of three series. Gaylord won 25-9 in game two. The Blue Devils took game three by a final score of 15-8.
The Vikings battled the Pellston Hornets in the second series of the night. Grayling won 25-19 in game one. Pellston tied the series at 1-1 with a 25-17 victory vs. the Vikings in game two.
In the rubber match, Grayling edged Pellston 15-13. The Vikings, in their last competition of the 2017 regular series, won 2-1 vs. the Hornets.
“Last night’s games were a good way to finish the regular season,” Coach Tim Zigila said. “I like the way Gaylord plays and challenges you to execute your offense. I thought game one was good, a nice back and forth battle with long volleys. The next two games we did not play as well and it showed. Lack of communication was one of the issues.”
“The game against Pellston was what I expected. They are a good defensive team that makes you work for points. After splitting games one and two, game three was anybody’s game. Fortunately we got out of a 7-3 hole and won the game. This tri meet is always a good way to prepare for district play – tough competition with different styles of play,” Coach Zigila said.
For the playoffs, the Vikings are in District 62-B this year. Harrison is the host school for the tournament.
Grayling drew a first round bye. The Vikings will play Standish Sterling Central or West Branch Ogemaw Heights in the semifinal round on Wednesday, Nov. 1, at 7:30 p.m. at Harrison.
The District 62-B championship game is slated for Thursday, Nov. 2, at 6 p.m.
