A 52-year-old Grayling man died after jumping into rough waters on Lake Margarethe on Saturday.
Crawford County Sheriff Kirk A. Wakefield said that Crawford County Central Dispatch received a 911 call at 2:54 p.m. on Saturday, June 10, regarding a missing swimmer.
Marine officers on Lake Margrethe responded to where a boat was located on the lake, and were informed that Mikel Stanley had dove into the water to recover an item, Wakefield said.
Witnesses in the boat lost sight of Stanley as the boat drifted away in high winds and rough water.
Grayling Department of Public Safety, Department of Natural Resources, and Crawford County Sheriff’s officers responded to the location to attempt to locate Stanley.
A U.S. Coast Guard helicopter searched the area, while divers from the Grand Traverse County and Roscommon County began their search for Stanley.
Divers called off the search at sundown on Saturday. They resumed the search in the early morning hours on Sunday, June 11. At approximately 10 a.m., Stanley’s body was located and was recovered in 11 feet of water, Wakefield said.
