Camp Grayling main gate closed due to construction project

Camp Grayling is currently reconstructing its main gate, forcing a detour of all traffic coming into the base – military and civilian – to an alternate entrance until the project’s completion later this year.
SFC Jeremie A. Mead, Community Relations Specialist for Camp Grayling Joint Maneuver Training Center Headquarters, said the upgrades to the gate were needed in order to “meet (Department of Defense) regulations.”
The new gate, once it is completed, will be “serpentine, to slow down traffic going to the gate,” and it will have more cameras for added security, SFC Mead said.
The upgraded gate is “going to be much wider” and will be better equipped to search vehicles if necessary “if the threat level goes up,” SFC Mead said.
The project started in the fall of 2016. The estimated completion time is “late June 2017.” SFC Mead said the improvements to the gate are overdue.
“It’s needed it for quite a while,” SFC Mead said.
The alternate entrance to the base during the construction is the South Access Gate off of Military Road, Camp Grayling officials said.
