Wrestling squad defeats Elk Rapids, Kalkaska during league meet

The varsity wrestling team from Grayling High School picked up two more league victories on Thursday night, defeating Elk Rapids and Kalkaska during a meet hosted by the Vikings.
First, Grayling wrestled against a short-handed Elk Rapids squad. Out of 14 weight classes, only four featured contested matches.
At 215, Ty Withers pinned his Elk Rapids counterpart in the first round, earning six team points for GHS.
Zach Kelly (heavyweight), Andrew Hopkins (103), and Nick Green (112) all won by default. Both teams forfeited at 119.
Grayling led 24-0.
Max Halstead (125) won by pin in round one vs. the Elks.
Cole Hibbard (130), Tim Burr (135), Gabe Ervin (140), and Parker Dole (145) won by default for Grayling.
The Vikings had a 54-0 lead.
Logan Joseph (152) won a 13-4 decision vs. his Elk Rapids opponent. Felipe Escalante (160) and Eli Bindschatel (171) won by default. Reece Ferrigan (189), in the last weight class of the meet, won by pin in round one vs. the Elks.
The final score was Grayling 76, Elk Rapids 0.
The Vikings battled the Kalkaska Blazers in their second series of the evening.
At heavyweight, Kelly won by pin vs. Kalkaska. Grayling forfeited at 103. Hopkins (112) pinned his Kalkaska counterpart in the second round. The Blazers won by pin at 119.
After four weight classes, the score was tied at 12-12.
Halstead (125) won by pin in the first round. Hibbard (130) and Burr (135) won by default.
Ervin (140) pinned his Kalkaska opponent in the third round. The Blazers won an 11-8 decision at 145. Joseph (152) won by pin in the first round.
Kalkaska won by pin in the second round at both 160 and 171.
Grayling led 42-27 with two weight classes remaining.
Withers and Ferrigan, at 189 and 215, respectively, pinned their Kalkaska opponents, and the Vikings won by a final score of 54-27.
“I was happy with Thursday,” Coach Andy Moore said. “We responded well. A little sloppy, but we got the job done.”
The Vikings (4-0 league) will compete in the Ithaca Invitational on Saturday, Jan. 21.
