Wrestling team gets two league wins on Thursday night

Grayling High School’s varsity wrestling team opened its Lake Michigan Conference schedule with two victories vs. league opponents on Thursday night at The Wheelhouse in Boyne City, getting wins vs. the Ramblers and the Charlevoix Rayders.
First, Grayling battled Boyne City. The Ramblers won a 12-6 decision in the first bout of the series (215 pounds), giving Boyne City three team points.
At heavyweight, Zach Kelly won by pin in the third round for Grayling. The Vikings forfeited at 103.
Andrew Hopkins (112) won by pin in the first round vs. Boyne City. At 119, Nick Green won by default. Cole Hibbard (125) also won by default for the Vikings.
Grayling led 24-9 with eight weight classes remaining.
Max Halstead (130) pinned his Boyne City counterpart in the second round. Tim Burr (135) also won by pin in the second round vs. the Ramblers. Gabe Ervin (140) won by default. Parker Dole (145) pinned his Boyne City opponent in the first round.
The Vikings had a 48-9 advantage.
Grayling forfeited at 152. At 160, Logan Joseph won a 10-3 decision vs. Boyne City. The Ramblers won by pin at 171. In the last bout of the series, Reece Ferrigan (189) pinned his Boyne City counterpart in the first round.
Grayling won by a final score of 57-21.
In their second series of the night, the Vikings built a big early lead with a series of forfeits by the Rayders and one pin.
At heavyweight, Kelly won by pin in the first round vs. Charlevoix. Hopkins (103), Green (119), Hibbard (125), and Burr (130) all won by default for the Vikings. Both teams forfeited at 112. Grayling led 30-0.
Charlevoix won a 9-5 decision at 135. At 140, the Rayders won a major decision by a score of 16-1.
At 145, Dole won by pin in the second round vs. Charlevoix. Both teams forfeited at 152. The Rayders won a 6-2 decision at 160.
Grayling led 36-11.
Eli Bindschatel (171) pinned his Charlevoix opponent in the second round. The Rayders won by pin at 189. Ferrigan (215) scored a pin in the first round in the final weight class of the series.
The final score was Grayling 48, Charlevoix 17.
Coach Andy Moore said the team has been performing well ever since it lost to Mancelona recently.
“We kind of turned it around,” Coach Moore said. “We wrestled well.”
The Vikings will host a Lake Michigan Conference quad meet at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 11. On Saturday, Jan. 14, the Vikings will host the Grayling Invitational.
