Troopers from the Houghton Lake Post of the Michigan State Police are investigating a fatal car accident, which occurred in Crawford County on Saturday.
The crash happened at 2:30 a.m. on Saturday, April 22, in Crawford County’s South Branch Township on M-18 north of the Village of Roscommon near Deerheart Valley Road.
The 25-year-old driver and lone occupant, Amber Skutt, of Roscommon, was killed when she lost control of the vehicle she was driving while negotiating a curve, said 1st Lt. Josh Lator, the commander for the Houghton Lake Post of the Michigan State Police.
Skutt’s vehicle crossed the centerline, left the roadway, and made contact with a tree on the north side of M-18.
Skutt was pronounced dead on scene by responding paramedics, Lator said.
Initial investigation shows speed to be the leading factor in the crash. Alcohol is unknown and will be determined at a later date through toxicology, Lator said.
Troopers were assisted at scene by deputies from the Crawford County Sheriff’s Office, Roscommon County Sheriff’s Office, Higgins Township Fire/EMS, South Branch Township Fire Department, and Frederic Township Fire/EMS.
