Interior designer opens office in the community to serve Grayling area clients

A Grayling native who has several years of experience as an interior designer and general contractor has opened up a branch office in the community to help clients spruce up their homes and businesses.
Kirk Day, the owner of Advantage and Associates, opened an office in the Flowers by Josie and Thanks a Latte basement this spring.
A 1987 Grayling High School graduate, Day attended Central Michigan University for interior design. He graduated in 1992 and started his business in Traverse City the following year.
Day has done a lot work on condominiums for Crystal Mountain Resort in Thompsonville, the Grand Traverse Resort in Acme,  and Shanty Creek Resort in Bellaire.
“I get them up to specs, so they’re on their rental programs,” he said. “I just make them nice and livable for the hospitality industry.”
After working in the field along with serving as an employee at a floor covering store, Day diversified and gained his general contractor’s license in 2008. His license means he can obtain building and remodeling permits for jobs and hire electricians, dry wallers, builders, and painters to do the work.
“I’m kind of a one stop shop, taking care of the whole process,” he said.
Through his friendship with Flowers by Josie Thanks a Latte owner Ernie Dawson, Day decided to start an office in Grayling. He strives to serve clients in Gaylord, Grayling, Higgins Lake, and Houghton Lake.
Day does paint color consultations, flooring projects, and remodeling projects. He is also a licensed Hunter Douglas dealer for blinds and shades, and can order furniture and do consultations on lighting fixtures.
“Basically, I can do everything from the ceiling to the floor,” he said.
Day also specializes in kitchen and bathroom remodeling projects
“A lot of times people are really daunted by tearing apart their kitchen and stuff like that, so I do a lot kitchen and bathroom remodels,” he said.
An avid photographer, Day can also provide artwork of northern Michigan landmarks, nature scenes, and scenic vistas for interior design projects.
Day already has one condominium project, which he has been hired to work on, that will break ground in the community soon.
“Hopefully, that’s going to take off and they’re really nice people,” he said.
Day aspires to do work for people that own cottages, homes, offices, and businesses and in the area.
“I hope it really takes off. I hope I can really service some people and give them some good direction and make people really proud of their homes,” he said.
Day plans on using those already established in the skilled trades in the area for his projects.
“My goal is to use local people as much as possible and to try to keep the business in the area,” Day said.
Day plans to hold midweek office hours in Grayling. He can also schedule appointments to consult and discuss potential projects.
