A store which offers cards for any occasion, gifts, and other merchandise is closing this weekend after operating in Grayling over three decades.
Flo’s Hallmark Shop, located at 2400 South I-75 Business Loop, is closing its doors on Saturday, August 17.
Flo Hajek bought out John’s Hallmark, which was ran by Grayling businessman John Cherven, in 1986. Cherven owns and operates the Grayling Mini Mall and surrounding properties on behalf of his family.
Hajek earned college degrees in fashion merchandising and in business education.
“I’ve been in retail my whole life,” she said.
Steven Hajek, Flo’s husband, does the finances for the business, and their daughter, Jamie Lamont, works as a store manager.
“I love it. I love working with her. We’re a great team,” Hajek said.
The three-generation family business has Hallmark stores in Gaylord and Petoskey, which will continue to operate.
The family opted to close the Grayling store due to the current state of business.
“People just aren’t shopping brick and mortar stores. They’re shopping online. They’re shopping at dollar stores and this town just is not supporting local business, which is unfortunate,” Hajek said. “We’re really sad, but it’s time to make that decision and we had to make the decision to close the store.”
After 33 years serving the community, Hajek said she will miss her loyal customers.
“I love all my customers. I still know a lot of my customers because I used to live here for a while,” she said. “I know quite a few of the older customers who have shopped here forever.”
Hajek said is saddens her that other gift stores in Grayling have closed.
Three employees will transition to work at the Gaylord store.
Grayling customers will continue to be invited to VIP customer events in Gaylord.
“I’ve enjoyed all the people who have been coming in saying goodbye, and I’ll see you in Gaylord, so that’s a good thing,” Hajek said.
Customers enrolled in the Hallmark rewards program can continue to redeem their points at any Hallmark store or online.
Items can also be shipped from the stores in Gaylord and Petoskey.
“Our Hallmark ornaments is a large part of our business for us, so we’ve been shipping them out of our Gaylord and Petoskey stores, whichever one has the product for them,” Hajek said.
The family, which has been in the retail business since 1968, plans on maintaining promotions for Grayling customers to get them the products they need.
“We do enjoy retail and we do enjoy customer service,” Hajek said. “We have won many awards from Hallmark and gift shop awards from the Crawford County Avalanche and Gaylord Herald Times.”
